While long time friends Rose Chang and Stephanie Drabik were in the midst of their post secondary educations in 2005, they decided to join their creative forces and start an online business selling their hand-crafted, limited-edition collectibles and affordable silk-screened t-shirts. After 3 years of designing and silk-screening t-shirts and making 1” buttons from their basement studios...and attending a whole lot of craft shows, in 2008 the two friends
decided to invest full-time in their business and “Crywolf” was born, and by 2019 they had opened brick and mortar storefronts. Like many other small businesses, they struggled during the pandemic and had to close their storefront and return to their hands-on roots (and basement studios) and to this day continue to bring their creations to customers online.
In 2016 Rose and Stephanie found themselves embroiled in somewhat of an international retail scandal – when they, and over a dozen other indie artists claimed retail giant Zara was stealing their designs. Largely through social media and a huge amount of support from the indie artist and consumer communities, Zara’s parent company investigated and immediately suspended the items from sale. Their win emboldened other indie creators to challenge big companies “copying” their designs, and broadened knowledge of existing legal rights and services surrounding intellectual property law.
We decided to add this little item as it is one of many symbols of the buy Canadian Vision we have here at Common Goods – and it would make a great stocking stuffer for just about anyone on your list.
