Papua New Guinea

In the contemporary global coffee industry, Papua New Guinea is wholly unique both in how coffee is harvested and exported from the country. While there are some estates and plantations, most coffee production comes from smallholder farmers, each with around 1–2 hectares of land called “gardens” on which they grow small amounts of coffee along with whatever else a family or community might need for use or sale.

Sourcing coffee in Papua New Guinea poses unique logistical, cultural, and linguistic challenges. The country’s many indigenous populations are often very distinct from one another in terms of custom and language, and individual communities might comprise only a few hundred people, making communication and the cultural sensitivity required to do business here more difficult than in other coffee-growing regions. Less than 10 percent of the population is connected to or uses the Internet for communications, and there are roughly 55 telephones (both fixed-line and cellular) for every 100 people.

Approachable - Honesty and transparency is key to everything we do. We understand that everyone has different opinions as to what makes a great tasting cup of coffee and we try to be as accommodating as possible to those individual tastes. We carry around 10-15 different coffees at any one time and roast these coffees to highlight the natural flavours within them. From light fruity African coffees to bolder chocolatey blends we pride ourselves on having something for all without sacrificing quality. This is backed up by our numerous awards in roasting competitions across the continent.

Quality - Everything that is roasted here at Eclipse is freshly roasted to order so you can rest assured that the coffee you are receiving is as fresh as possible upon arrival. For each coffee you will find a detailed description, found on the product pages of our websites, of how it is roasted and how we think that coffee is best brewed. This we would say is a guide to brewing the coffee rather than a recommendation as we still want you to have fun exploring and experimenting within the world of specialty coffee.

Sustainability - All of our coffees go through an independent screening process to ensure the coffee is not only grown environmentally responsibly, but also in a socially responsible way. These findings are shared on our website alongside the coffee description so that you know exactly where and how the coffee you are drinking is grown. Rest assured that our single origin coffee is sourced from only the best farms around the world and we reward these great farms by paying above the market price to help them further develop their coffees and also provide support to their local communities.

Reducing our environmental footprint within our cafes is also hugely important to us. One of the biggest ways we do this is by offering a 50c discount on any drink that is served in a reusable cup and for anyone who is unable to take advantage of this all our single use cups are compostable. We also encourage our customers, who are able to, to bring in reusable containers to the roastery for coffee bean purchases in exchange for a discount on their purchase.
